More Diaper Cakes: Valentine's Day Theme

This is the diaper cake I made for our church's silent auction. I went with a Valentine's Day theme and kept the accessories to a minimum. For something different, I decided to offer the winner a cake with Seventh Generation chlorine-free diapers.

Baby items included: rattle, teething ring, Disney "magic towels", and bibs shaped into flowers. A diaper cake this size would sell for about $45.

Designer Clorox Wipes?

Is was only a matter of time before a cleaning brand chose to target the artsy and graphic design-minded.

I spotted these Clorox Wipes in Acme today.
Old me would have purchased them because they are just so pretty, but present day me is a budget/bargain/practical shopper and sees a marketing ploy/genius idea for what it is! Clever branding I say! And if you visit the Clorox site, we'll soon be able to design our own canister ourselves!

Mrs Mo's Pretty Picks: Kyra Sedgwick at the SAG Awards

I love awards season. Not for the ceremony of course. For the FASHION: Who wore what, who should have rethought their ensemble and who got it right. One actress who always seems to look fabulous by dressing simple yet very chic is Kyra Sedgwick. And at 43, she knocks the younger generation out of the water (throw in Kevin Bacon too for some classic eye candy).

Her outfit at the SAG awards was vintage Chanel from Rare Vintage in NYC and I've managed to put together a pretty decent "Look-for-Less".

White tube top: $52.50; Chiffon A-line Skirt: $59; Shades of Purple Necklace: $70 or Aurora Borealis Rhinestone Necklace: $45.

From McGosling to McLucas

Rachel McAdams was spotted mid-smooch with Sweet Home Alabama and Poseidon star Josh Lucas at the Inauguration Purple Ball.  All the gossip-mags are claiming new romance. I'm guessing: the girl is single and having fun with hotties who bare a slim resemblance to Gosling. What do you think?

A Tierney Valentine's Day Sale

Mrs Mo's Shopping Local Guide: Green Design Princeton NJ

Raise your hands if you've already broken your New Year's Resolution to lose weight. Okay, put your hands down. Now raise your hands if you are surprised at all? I thought so.

Let's be honest people, the "losing weight" resolution is so yesterday. It's a sure-to-fail idea, as a 1/3 of people will break their resolution by the end of January. But it is not too late to change your mind and start a new resolution goal for 2009. Let's stick with the healthy theme, but go with something that is easy and good for you, your family and even the whole world. The solution is to "go Green" and the place to start is at Green Design in Princeton.

Located in a perfect spot across from the Princeton Library, Green Design is an eco-goods store owned by recent Bay area transplant Tim McNulty and offers a variety of organic and eco-friendly products from clothing and linens to toys and home goods. The majority of the goods in the shop are from small businesses around the US like wooden puzzles from a toymaker in VT and handmade soaps from a farm in CA to offbeat nature inspired onesie designs by Salvor Fauna out of NYC. Beyond children's clothing and toys, McNulty offers a generous selection of home goods like nylon grocery bags by Baggu, stainless steel water bottles by Klean Kanteen, bamboo cutting boards, organic body scrubs & butters by Trillium Organics and organic bed linens & clothing by Under the Canopy. My favorite find was the Klean Kanteen bottle especially since I've been more aware of the BPA toxin threat in many plastic containers for food, drink and baby formula.

If you're asking yourself: I'd like to "go green" or live more organically, but where do I start, McNulty will tell you to "think of the first thing that you want to be healthy: your body. From there you have many options like the Klean Kanteen bottles, organic soaps and even cast-iron cookware because the non-stick skillets we all have use chemicals to make it stick free. Even our children's toys are great because they use non-toxic materials and lead-free paint."

Instead of rambling on, I'll let you get a taste of what you can find at Green Design. Watch the video below or simply click on the thumbnails to view.

My Hairstory: Pre and Post Natal

I have been able to classify each semester in college by hair color or length and I always swore that once I found a fabulous stylist that I would leave my hair alone.

Well, fast forward 7 years and I'm suffering from multiple hair personalities again. Problem is: I grew up as a blond. Right around high school, it started growing in dark blond. Now, it's like a light brown. I've tried to embrace the brunette, but always prefer the saying "Blonds have more fun." I realized that I have changed my hair multiple times over my pre and postnatal months. Shocking, funny, a little ridiculous, but always fun for reminiscing. Each time I change my hair, I miss the old look and when I achieve the old look, I want something new again.

Here is my hairstory. What look do you like the best? What is yours?
Photo 1: Aug 2007 (1 week prenatal)
Photo 2: Dec 2007 (about 20 weeks...it was safe to color and I went a tad darker since I was leaving it alone until Maddy was born)
Photo 3: June 2008 (1 month postnatal..the old highlights are breaking through while my natural color is growing in)
Photo 4: July 2008 (2 months post...embracing the brunette goddess within..or just trying to match my sister)
Photo 5: Sept 2008 (4 months post...notice the reddish tint since the brown has faded)
Photo 6: Oct 2008 (5 months post...the big chop!)
Photo 7: Oct 2008 (I stupidly applied highlights from a box and they turned orange...I missed my blond hair)
Photo 8: Jan 2009 (8 months post...almost back to natural)

Haute Baby Shower Gift: Diaper Cakes

Getting inspiration from my fellow Twitter mompreneur, Renee at Cutie Booty Cakes, I channeled my inner craft-goddess and made a diaper cake for my friend's baby shower. I did some research on how to to make them and found many helpful videos on YouTube. And I have to say it came out pretty freakin' awesome!

Cyndy's theme was ocean with purple accents. I concentrated mostly on the purple and tried to find any ocean/sea/water theme toys/accessories. I can't wait to make more for anyone who wants one! The materials I used are listed below, but remember that every cake and cake designer is different. You don't have to follow my steps exactly. Watching the videos will actually help understand the diaper part since it's a little hard to explain in words. All I can say is thank goodness these are not edible because then I can kiss my WW success goodbye!!

Materials:
1 pkg 66 count diapers (newborn or size 1)
1 pkg rubber bands of various sizes (Dollar Store)
3-4 purple hydrangea stems (Dollar Store)
1 baby bottle(Dollar Store)
1 sippy cup (Dollar Store)
1 roll decorative Grossgrain ribbon (at least 1 " width)(Michael's)
1 roll contrasting Grossgrain ribbon (less than 1 ")(Michael's)
Glue gun
Scissors
Gift Basket Wrap
Assorted baby toys/accessories (Babies R Us and Dollar Store):
1 pkg white baby socks (Babies R Us)
1 rattle
2 pkgs pacifiers
1 pkg tub toys
1 pkg finger puppets
1 pkg baby socks

Directions:
1) Using a large enough rubber band to wrap around a lot of diapers, begin to wrap diapers (printed side in) around the baby bottle. Essentially you will overlap the diapers to make a spiral around the bottle. Keep adding diapers until you get a decent size base. Some people use an actual cake pan as a guide for size. You will use about 1 1/2 of the diaper pkg.

2) For the second layer, I started by rolling the diapers into a tube shape(printed side in) and wrapping a small rubber band to hold secure. I made 6 of these and then held them together with a large rubber band. Take the group of 6 and place it directly on the top layer so that the top of the baby bottle will slide through the middle. From there I continued with same technique from the bottom layer to maintain a consistent look.

3) Take your ribbon and wrap around covering the rubber band on your cake. I fastened the ribbon by using a few drops of hot glue.

4) Then I took the sippy cup and placed the socks around it with the cuff of the socks facing up. Then use a rubber band to hold socks in place. Slide the cup through the top layer.

5) Then came decorating time. I decided to make a front and back to the cake using the back side to store all of the goodies. The front of the cake showcased the detail of the ribbon and flowers so it looked more like a cake than a gift basket.

6) The final step is to wrap the cake with cellophane to protect the toys and diapers from any admiring fingers who might want it for his or herself.

Twitter 10 lb Challenge

The inevitable happened. I've hit the cliched "last 10 lbs" plateau. I didn't think it would happen since I made it through the holiday by actually LOSING weight. Maybe I got too confident and cocky in my weight loss. Maybe I was on so much adrenaline before Christmas that the post holiday slump has hit my weight loss hard. Maybe it's just my pig out sessions on pretzels. Whatever the case, I need a motivator and I can't do it alone. I need my Twitter buddies!

For those of you in Twitterland and on Weight Watchers, you may be a WW Tweet member: sharing your stories of successes or bummer days. Many thanks to the ladies over at "Does This Blog Make Me Look Fat" for starting this group. I love finding other women who have the same goal in common. My entire WW journey has been through the Internet using the online tools. I haven't been to meetings and haven't really relied on the help and encouragement of a group. But I think it's time. For the last push, I want to get there together. So, here's the challenge:

By using Twitter and WW Tweets, let's lose 10 lbs by March 1. I initially thought, maybe by Valentine's Day, but that's like crazy dieting and I can't do that. March 1 gives us about 6 weeks at around 1-2 lbs per week.

Just follow these steps to get started:

1) First, you must follow WW Tweets.
2) Anytime you want to message the ENTIRE CHALLENGE GROUP, you have to send a DM to WWTweets. Do NOT do an @ reply.
3) To join the challenge, DM WWTweets and paste the following: "@hmorris0506 Count me in for the 10 lb challenge!" and include your WI day.
4) Spend the week offering tips on fitness & food, asking questions and sending motivating messages. Whatever you like. Just add the hashtag #10lbchallenge in your message.
5) Lastly, leave a comment with your Twitter address so we can follow each other and offer support beyond this challenge. You can find me over at @hmorris0506.
6) Bookmark this post and once a week, post your weigh-in stats, food or fitness tips or the week, and what you will do differently (if necessary) next week.

Amazing Photos: The Hudson River Crash

It was hard to miss the amazing crash and rescue of the US Air flight that crashed into the Hudson. All photo-sharing sites were a buzz with eyewitness snap shots and news screen captures. This photo was taken by @jkrums on Twitter from a rescue Ferry. The only word I can think of to sum this up is AMAZING.

Walking for a Cause: Enable Walk 'n' Roll

One of my many volunteer activities has been as a committee member of the Enable Walk 'n' Roll Charity Walk which is happening on Feb 8th, 2009. It has been a lot of fun planning with the members and should be a fun event. The best part is that the walk is in INDOORS and there is no need to commit to a specific number of laps or miles. This is a great event for mommies too! Strollers are welcome and I'll be there with Maddy! Come join me and my committee as we walk.

Get in shape for “Walk ‘N Roll with Enable” to be held at PEAC Health & Fitness in Ewing, N.J. on February 8, 2009, 1 pm, on their indoor track. The walk is for persons with disabilities, their families and friends, community citizens, volunteers—anyone that wants to participate.

Enable is looking for persons who will participate as walkers, and for help raising pledges for the walkers. The Honorary Chairs will be Cynthia DeSouza, Ms. Wheelchair New Jersey 2008 and Kelly Rouba, Ms. Wheelchair New Jersey 2007. PEAC has donated their space and Novo Nordisk is one of the sponsors.

Contact Kirsten Yard at (609) 987-5003, ext. 124 or by email at walk@enablenj.org for more information, a walk registration, or pledge form or go to www.enablenj.org.

Enable, Inc., a not-for-profit organization serving hundreds of people with disabilities and their families in Central New Jersey, provides services and supports, offering a variety of options from group homes to in-home services, day programs and individualized supports. Enable recently added Self-Directed Services and services to elderly persons with disabilities to its offerings.

For more information on Enable, Inc. and the services they provide, please send an e-mail to info@enablenj.org, call (609) 987-5003, ext. 124, or visit: www.enablenj.org

Many thanks to
